More myths

While in Bocas Province I collected a few more myths and legends

  • In D’s community they say there is an internet video of Uracca’s head being cut off. Uracca lived in the 1500’s and is a Gnäbe hanbdero who fought the Spanish.  They believe that doctors are sterilizing women.  Before Columbus they say the Gnäbes lived in houses made of gold.  If a fish bone gets stuck in your throat, rub a cat across your throat and the bone will be dislodged.  If a monkey scares your child, cut some hair off a monkey’s head, back and tail and burn it under your child’s nose.

From  a volunteer in the Darien:

  • Demonic possession is not uncommon.  Just about every plant can cure cancer; they do not have a precise understanding of what cancer it.  His community is home to a race of super intelligent subterranean people who wear green clothes.  They come out at night to steal things and cause mischief.  Their feet are backwards- they leave backwards footprints.  They do not eat, just smell the food and then discard it.  Madre de aqua- a human like creature who lives in the water, who grabs and then eats you.  There are also ‘duendes,’ elfs, who are always around water.  They harass people, especially children.
